Or, the knitting needle monitor, if you prefer…

This may be a huge generalisation, but knitters are fairly organised people. OK, some more than others,  but at the very least the intention to have an orderly space is present even if this isn’t always achieved.

Our space in the pavilion is small – we have a cupboard and space for a couple of storage boxes. We don’t possess much: coffee, tea, biscuits; yarn odds and ends; buttons; books and patterns; knitting needles and crochet hooks.

Until fairly recently, the knitting needles were kept in a jug, as you can see:

Nice jug but everything in it a bit of a mish-mash. Whenever anyone wanted a particular size of needle, they’d have to root around for ages trying to match up a pair. This could turn into a fun challenge/game, as in – how many pairs of 4mm needles can I find in a minute? what can you do with just one 12mm needle? there’s one long needle and one short one, so how can I extend the short one to make a long pair? Or, it could be an exercise in frustration and futility.

This messy state of affairs was something that one of our ladies felt needed attention and one day she turned up armed with elastic bands, sticky labels and bags (which I think she may have bought specially) and brought some much needed order to our collection of pins.

Now, we have paired sets neatly sorted, circulars labelled and bagged, and everything sized. No more rummaging and cursing; we can sit back, relax and carry on with what’s important – knitting, chatting and having a good time.
